Learning Activity – Create a Logo

Practical Assignment (observation and analysis)

Develop a name for a dog food product. Design a logo for this product, using full colour. The logo must contain a main visual and typography. (Use the β€œPeople Saving Pets” logo as a guide – this does not mean your design should be the same, it is simply an example.) Follow each of the fundamental steps outlined above, in that sequence and take note of what needs to be handed in as you progress through these steps:

  • Exploration – Use sketching techniques to draw thumbnails and hand in your thumbnails as scanned PDFs.
  • Focus – Highlight three of the thumbnail ideas that you consider the best options and state why. Hand in an A4 with visuals of the three chosen thumbnails; include reasons for choosing each of these three options.
  • Construction – Use sketching techniques and redraw ONE of your chosen concepts until you’ve reached a conclusion on a successful logo. Hand in your drawings as scanned PDFs.
  • Testing – Experiment more with your favourite options from Step 3 and ask the opinion of a few people. Hand in examples of the logos shown to people and write their feedback or opinion on each.
  • Refinement – Choose your final design and execute it in Adobe Illustrator, along with the name of the product. Hand in your final logo as an A4 PDF.

Exploration

When I started thinking about names I had to think about what I accosiated With dogs and Food. It was important that I had a name before I started with the logo. Personally I think the logo should be less abstract, and very fitted for the purpose so it could be easily recognized as dog Food. This can ofcourse create expected sketchings and drawings, but sometimes easy is the best way, especially for this case.

Focus

I came up with a lot of things, but my main focus was the Health and by having a good health you also get an active dog. I started looking for latin words for different English Words like Health, life, active and so on, and there was a lot to find, but as I researched the Words, many had thought of this before me, and I didn’t want to find a name that was already out there. The names I came up With was:

  • Hearty
  • Vivus (latin, means live, alive)
  • Vivo (latin, also means live)
  • Active
  • Living
  • Champ
  • Nutri

Construction

So I started skething without doing any researches on logos first or other similar Products.

My skeatches are a bit messy, but as I mentioned main focus was Health and the heartbeat came to my mind early. I tried drawing an active and running dog, I tried to implement figures of two dogs and a heart in a tree (to give it a more environmental look), a paw With leafs, heartbeat inside of different elements and implementing elements in the heartbeat.

Testing

I had top Three With I liked and went for the consept of the heartbeat, so I asked people on snapchat to reach as many as possible, and asked for their feedback on my top Three names and logo which was hearty, vivo and vivus and the logos you can see. I chose these because those were the ones I thought was clean, suited the names and the simlicity of it.

I got a lot of good and constructive feedback.

Name

  • Hearty – a nice name which means you care (many people liked it)
  • Vivo – I liked the sound of it, easy to remember. (many people, meybe most, liked it)
  • Vivus – sound to much like virus

For the name it was hearty and Vivo that was the “winners”, but vivo is also a book puplishing which many teachers would think of if they saw that name, as I got feedback on. So I chose hearty.

Logo

It was definitive the heartbeat logo that most people liked, but the paw wasn’t far behind. They liked the idea and simplicity, and it was really nice. The paw also was Nice, and People liked it, it was easy to know it was for dogs and it was a clean and round shape. The bone had two or Three likes, but not a big winner, as I agree.

So I drew a new one and mixed the feedback on what people liked and came up With this:

Refinement

I kept the heartbeat, but integrated the paw instead of the dog. I designed it in illustrator and this is my final result:

I also made a size element to go with the logo for the different sizes of the dogs – small, medium and maxi.

I hope you like it! πŸ™‚ Below you will find my pdf’s.
